This is not a matter of what you like. By working more than 30 years in NASA spreading waste into space you should have learned one lesson. If the quality of your modules had high standards the lifetime will be longer. I am sure there has been discussions about replacement before you waved them goodbye and thought about the risk of the waste knocking your hat off your head.
If the camera in a mobile phone stop working there will be no need to throw the phone, the computer, the screen or the battery in the bin.
If a camera producer has come up with a better working camera module since your camera module was produced lets say 2 years ago, then your phone camera will become even better than the original by replacing it.
This simple trick to make things better by standards not design will reduce waste production and the global warming too.
